DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE CURRICULUM
Our Driving Mindset
What kind of driver are we? How do we approach driving? Is our ultimate goal to get home safely or get home quickly?
Vehicle Safety Features
This section covers backing safety and proper use of mirrors and headlights. It also reviews the proper use of seatbelts, why we choose not to wear them, and the myths surrounding them. It also includes important information about airbags, as well as child safety seating.
Unexpected Driving Situations
Learn how to handle unexpected issues like brake failure, tire blowouts, and skidding or hydroplaning.
Working Together
This section covers road maneuvers that affect other drivers on the road such as how to merge into traffic and why we should use our turn signals. Why we shouldn't be "that" left lane driver or tailgater and how to maintain a safe distance behind the vehicle in front of you.
Sharing the Road
In this section, we identify the types of vehicles we encounter on the road and how to drive safely with them. We will touch on bicyclists, motorcyclists, semi-truck drivers, school bus drivers, emergency vehicles, pedestrians, and aggressive drivers.
Speeding
Speeding causes 1/3 of our crashes. In this lesson we look at the reasons we choose to speed and how to slow down. You will learn why the speed is much lower in construction and school zones and neighborhoods and towns.
Impaired Driving
You will learn why impaired driving is so dangerous, how your Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) is determined by many different factors, and how quickly you can become impaired. We will also look at the costs associated with a DUI and how you can avoid getting a DUI. The lesson ends with an overview of drug impairment, including marijuana.
Drowsy Driving
This lesson provides information on the seriousness of drowsy driving and when most drowsy driving crashes occur. It offers advice on how best to cope with drowsy driving and the best option if you get sleepy while driving.
Distracted Driving
In this section, you learn the definition of distracted driving with the most emphasis on cell phone use, why multi-tasking is a myth, and how cell phone use can affect our ability to drive safely.
It's Your Choice
Driving unsafely is a choice. Driving safely is also a choice. In this section we explore what makes us mad about other drivers, while recognizing that we also might be guilty of those same habits.
